Take home chemotherapy bottle
My chemotherapy consists of 4 drugs (now 3 drugs starting chemo #12). While at the hospital, I am injected with 3 of the 4 drugs – Avastin, Leucovorin and Oxaliplatin. The process will take about 3 hours. After that, I am attached with this bottle (see pix below) and a ballon-like container inside of it filled with the 4th drug, 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU). 5-FU takes about 48 hours to go into my body, so with this bottle, I can go home instead of staying at the hospital for 2 days for the drug to finish. Another great innovation! The ballon requires no electricity to operate and it has this heat sensor on the tube which controls the injection. I heard that in the old days, an electric pump is needed for at home chemotherapy.
Below are photos of the progression of 5-FU injection. See the balloon inside of the bottle shrink over time. Photos taken from 8/16/2006 to 8/18/2006.
