This post is about the flu shot I had last November while having the follow up visit with my oncologist and my insurance company is not covering it…

On 11/27/2009 I went to see my doctor, Dr. O’Reilly for the follow up visit. About 2 weeks prior to that, I figure if I were to go see the doctor, I might as well have the flu shot done at the same time to save time and money for me and the doctor/insurance company. I called my doctor’s office and scheduled an appointment for the flu shot for the visit on 11/27/2009. So I had the flu shot done while visiting the doctor. I also had lab work done right before doctor’s appointment, however it is done completely separate from the flu shot.

Recently, I received a letter of explanation of benefit from my insurance company Empire Blue saying that the flu shot I had was not covered. I was really shocked and confused. I had the flu shot with my doctor and it should be covered. I phoned several times to Empire as well as my doctor’s office and neither one could help. Empire says the flu shot needs to be bill through the doctor. The doctor’s office says they have all their billing done through the hospital billing system. The hospital billing says that’s how they bill the patient. My doctor uses Memorial Sloan Kettering hospital’s facility and I am not sure how it works internally.

I am really confused as to what this is all about. A flu shot to me should be covered and shouldn’t be so complicated. And I did in fact got the flu shot through my appointment with the doctor. It doesn’t make sense to me.

My insurance Empire Blue told me that the flu shot is covered if it’s done at a doctor’s office but NOT covered if it’s done at a hospital. I am not sure what the difference is for me or for anyone. A flu shot is a flu shot and it should be covered no matter where you have it. What’s going on with the insurance company??

I wrote a letter to Empire Blue to dispute the non-covered $56 we will see how it goes.

I have attempted several time to learn to play guitar in the past maybe 10 or so years but each time just failed for some reason. However, that have changed since November of 2009, thanks to Youtube and people who posted song tutorials on it. One day I just went on to Youtube and found a few video tutorials of the song “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz and was amazed at how good many of them are. Several of them are made specifically for beginners and provided easy chords and strumming pattern to play the song.

I decided to give it another shot. I sort of know the chords but weren’t able to transition between them smoothly so I practiced and practiced and I got it all of it a sudden. The first week was tough, I was only able to play about 15 minutes a day because the left hand fingers start to really hurt from the metal strings. It almost made me want to stop but I just do what I can each day. After about a week or so the calluses started to form on the tip of the fingers and they don’t really hurt that much anymore. I started to play for half an hour or more each day. Learning a song I like also helped so I can hum or sing along with.

It’s been about 3 months since I started learning to play guitar and I have learned to play and sing 3 songs by heart. They are “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz, “Hey Soul Sister” by Train, and “Grow Old with You” by Adam Sandler. I am also working on “Hotel California” by The Eagles, “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Collait, and “Fireflies” by Owl City. Now I don’t know if I am good the songs or not haha but I sure do enjoy playing and singing it Perhaps I’ll post a video or two if I have time to make them.

It’s about 3 years and 3 months after I stopped chemotherapy. Everything is ok now. No visible side effect like hair lost or anything. I got a full head of hair. The only thing left is the tingling sensation on the toes and the fingers (just very slightly). The feel on the toes are just constant and once in a while will “increase” in intensity but just for a short moment. The feel on the fingers are minor and almost negligible. Still waiting for the day that it is gone forever.

I was in bed but was up all night and I felt like I can lift 300lbs of weights. haha All day I felt fine even though I didn’t really get any sleep. By the end of the day I think the effect is finally wearing off and I think I am ready to jump into bed and have a good night of sleep. Good night all!

Just had a CT scan today. It went smoothly except I got poked twice for getting the IV into the vein. Tried left arm at first, it didn’t get through fully. Tried right arm and got it. What I hate is when the nurse try to fish for the vein by pulling and pushing the needle around… man talking about it is making me dizzy haha Overall the entire process is quick and painless. I’ll be visiting the doctor on Friday for the result (hopefully still good) and getting my flu shots.
