A Good Nap – Colonoscopy

Filed under: General on Saturday, July 25th, 2009 by Cancer Guy | No Comments

It’s been a year since my last colonoscopy and the doctor recommended having another one so it was scheduled. I had it yesturday 7/24 and it took about 4 hours overall. The actual procedure is probably 20-30 mins. I arrived at the hospital roughly 20 mins before the 9am appointment time. They checked me in immediately and had me changed into the hospital gown. (Lockers for clothing and shoes were provided) Then I was was taken to the waiting area and IV placed into my right arm. (actually top side of my hand this time) The waiting room is for both patients who are waiting for the procedure and who are finished with the procedure so you can see people who got wheeled out from the procedure laying side ways on the bed and still unconscious from the anesthesia.
The nurses asked some questions and gave some information. Then the anesthesiologist came and briefed me about the sedation for the procedure, which basically will put us in sleep through the entire procedure. I asked about the possibility of having a lighter doze of it and so I can watch the screen, she said it’s possible just asked the nurses when in the procedure room. But I got a feeling they are reluctant to do it for some reason. Maybe I’ll go hardcore and asked not to be sedated for the next one. I wonder how uncomfortable it would be haha. They had me sign this paper about the colonoscopy which I vaguely remember what it was. So I waited for nearly 2 hours until almost 11am when they finally wheeled me into the procedure room. The setup was quick, they explained a little bit about the procedure and the doctor came and said hello. Next thing you know they injected me with 2 tubes of meds (one clear, one milky) They call it the elixir of sleeping if I remember correctly. It only took maybe 15 seconds to knock me out. I remember I said I am feeling it, then the vision started to blur white from outside in and I think I said bye to everyone I can see last (bye Angela, bye Cathy, and bye Charles haha) When I woke up I was in the waiting room again. The nurse asks me how I am doing and I ask her what time it was and it was about 11:35am and that I have been out for about 15 mins. I was still heavy in the head and body. They let everyone rest for roughly 30 mins by which time should be fully awake. Then were get escorted to a seating chair to wait for doctor and nurse for the discharge while being served some juices and cookies. It was delicious considering having not eating for a day. The doctor said everything looks fine. There was one small polyp (~4mm) which she removed. Ju came pick me up as required by the hospital for discharge. We went to lunch right after and then head back. What a nice nap but I think I need another one ;)

Today I measured my body fat percentage and it’s still 9%. I did it a few more times and it’s still 9%! yes! It’s been consistently ~9% for the past 2 days so it’s not a glitch or anything ;) P90X is awesome! and I am more ripped as ever! :)

Woohoo!

Went to see the doctor today and everything is still good! Woohoo! With what happened on the trip to California, I was slightly concerned with the condition. Glad the result came out negative on any cancer cells! However, it’s been 2 years since the last colonoscopy so gotta do another one… eek.
I stop by my cousin’s work place on the way back and talk to him for a few hours which is pretty awesome! :)

Woow, I just check today and I hit 9% body fat! Not sure if the scale is accurate but at least relatively the fat percentage is going down so all the exercises with P90X really is doing it!!

CT Scan

Got my CT Scan done today. The entire trip took around 4 hours but the actual scan took only less than 10 mins! If only they can invent some kind of home use device for self scanning, it’d be so convenient. As always, I drank a lot, I mean a lot of water after the scan to flush out the dye/contrast liquid ingested orally and through IV. They said 8 glasses within 24 hours but I think I must have drank like 16 glasses or more haha I had to go to the bathroom all day. Interesting, I remember every time after I had my scan and took the anti-allergic medicine Prednison, I couldn’t sleep the next night, but this time I had no problem sleeping. I wonder if the drug has less effect on me now or I use to get too excited after the scan either from thinking about the scan result or just business ideas. I can never be sure of it. haha

P90X Bring It!

I have been on this exercising program for the past half year, it’s called P90X! It is awesome! It has helped me really get in shape because it’s “simple” to do, just play the video and follow the instructions. The entire 90 days of workout is plotted out so you don’t have to do the scheduling. They even provide the worksheet for recording your progress so you can see your improvements over time. I lost maybe around 15 lbs and lost 5-6% body fat. I weight about 140 lbs and around 11% body fat. It has become part of my life. Now if I don’t do it I don’t feel good! The first few weeks is the toughest because you will feel sore all over every single day but once you passed that stage, it’s like a walk in the park now :) Also this program is simple to setup and you can easily set it up at home. You just need some dumb bells and a chin up bar. it’s very convenient for me to exercise at home because it saves time and I can do it whenever I need to. I usually start at around 10pm and end around 11:30pm to midnight. Some people may not like working out before going to bed, but it works for me. I get my exercises, exhaust myself, take a shower and then go to bed. I sleep better. If I work out in the morning, I would feel tired all day and can’t really focus on doing work and other activities. Just want to share this info. P90X Bring It! haha

Hospitalized in LA

Hospitalized

I was hospitalized from 3/11 to 3/13 due to intestine blockage while on a business trip in California. The trip was suppose to be 2 weeks. For most part of the trip it was great, a little exhausting because of the early wakeups but overall fine. My original flight was to be on the morning of 3/12 but I didnt make it. On the evening of 3/10, after dinner around 7ish, I feel there’s something wrong with the stomach. Initially I thought it was food poisoning or something because I wanted to throw up periodically. I did that for about every half an hour. I tried my best to let it out. However, by midnight, my lower ab area was in pain and I was still throwing up except there’s nothing coming out. I sort of know there’s something wrong, but I was hoping it’d just go away if I rest up a little. The urge to throw up gets stronger and more frequent. The pain gets more intense. I was so exhausted by 3am I was wheezing while breathing. Finally I woke up others to take me to the hospital, but not before I went online and look for my insurance info and prepared a throw up bag myself haha My friend found a hospital near by so we got into the car. I think by this time I was a little out of it. but I remember being driven around for a while and I believe we were driving in the wrong direction for a few minutes. Finally we got to the hospital. It was long but at the time it felt like forever lol We went thru the ER door, while still throwing up. Got admitted and they wheeled me to a bed and had me lay on it. I was uncomfortable because of the pain and wanting to throw up. The nurse and a doctor asked some questions and later gave me pain killer as well as anti-nausea drugs. They really worked cuz I felt much better after a short few minutes. I told them about my prior surgeries and chemotherapy so obviously they had to put me through CAT Scan to check my ab area. After the result came out, they said it’s intestine blockage but they also saw “SOMETHING” as well as kidney stone in one of the kidney. It’s the worst whenever they said they saw “something” but not sure what it is. The blockage can be caused by different things but they can’t pinpoint which yet. But first thing first, they have to fix my blockage problem.

IV
Sweet IV, you hate it yet you love it lol Also got poked with needle a few times a day for blood tests.

Basically they put me on IV and place a tube thru my nostril down to the stomach to suck out all food particles and fluid and placed me under NPO which means no food, no water, nothing through the mouth. They told me sometimes the blockage will go away by itself, if not, then I will need a surgery to “clear” it up. They way they know if the blockage is free is when I start to pass gas. So I was thinking, come on, it can’t be that hard. I was trying a few times but nothing was coming out. Then I started walking around the hallway hoping it would help with the condition but it didnt. By evening, I think I felt a small one but I wasn’t 100% sure because it was really small. Second day, there was still nothing until the afternoon right after I saw the doctor, I felt it! There will two tiny pops haha I was soOoOoo excited! Then even better, I have the urge to go to the bathroom for #2! I went and some pasty brownish stuff came out! I took a pic of it so I have proof to the nurse and doctor that I did it lol I told the nurse and they emailed the doctor I believe. By 3rd day, they saw my condition was really good so they let me take the tube in my nostril out (the worst part of it all, gagging and made an abrasion on the under side of the tip of right side of my nose). What’s funny is that the scabbing resulted from the abrasion looked like a piece of booger stuck at the opening of my right nostril, not a pretty sight lol

Tube

Soon after they gave serve me liquid food, juice, and jello! It was the best meal ever haha And finally, they discharged me in the early afternoon. I was soo hungry I went out and bought $50 some dollars worth of juices, jello, and canned soup! lol ;) Stayed in California for another 5 days to rest up before flying home. Home sweet home :)

Oh I just remember back when I had my surgery, the doctor told me that I might have intestine blockage or what they called “Adhesion”. Basically the growth of the scar tissues interfering with intestine and internal organs. I believe women who had C-section for child birth may experience similar condition.

I want to thank my friends AY, FD, MC for being there for me! Thank you guys!! and the nurses and doctors at the Whittier Hospital! They are very friendly and attentive to the patients!
